Ecoaddendum is the parent organization for Birds, Butterflies, and Bees, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting ecological recovery and environmental stewardship.

It’s not just about flowers.

Diversity. The diversity that the naturalists wandering the North American continent chronicled in the 18th century no longer surrounds us in our daily lives. To buy a shrub or plant for our yard, most of us go to a “big box” chain or store, and select from row upon row of cloned plants that originated in Asia or South America and are shipped from out of state. The amazing variety of plants described by William Bartram is nowhere to be seen.

Sustainability. Georgia’s native species are adapted to Georgia soils, seasons, and climate. Properly selected and situated native plants thrive in Georgia’s climate, require less maintenance and water, support bird and wildlife populations, and heal the environment.

EcoAddendum’s mission is to put Georgia’s native plants back into Georgia’s landscape.

Why use native plants?

  • Georgia native plants have inhabited the area since pre-Columbian times and are acclimated to Georgia’s climate, soil type and weather. Thus native plants are more drought tolerant, require less maintenance, and are sustainable.
  • Native plants are active members in their ecosystem, unlike nonnative plants, which may be detrimental or even invasive.
  • Native plants share a biological history with the native birds, butterflies, bees, pollinators and other wildlife and therefore support vital habitat.
  • A garden with native plants is a happier, healthier, more sustainable garden with a higher yield of fruits, veggies and blooms.
  • Plants create breathable air, filter our water and capture sunlight turning it into energy via photosynthesis. Plants are at the bottom of our food pyramid supporting all other life forms.
