Old Growth Forest Walk in Frazer Forest
Join us for a stroll through the old growth woodlands at Frazer Forest, a special tract of privately owned land which was originally part of the Fernbank Forest in the Lake Claire neighborhood near Druid Hills. We invite Eco-A volunteers, neighbors and friends of Grove Park to participate in the continued restoration efforts of this special and unique remnant old-growth forest. We'll focus on removing invasive species carefully from this high-value forest. Join us for an urban hike of about 3 miles along the forested trails at Southside Park. This trail network, often used by mountain bikers, is part of an extended forest area not far from Lake Charlotte Preserve. Joel Slaton, who spent his youth exploring woodlands in Atlanta's southeast quadrant will co-lead our walk, and may be able to take us to the ruins of an old trolley car. The Pickett's Mill historic site, located west of Atlanta near Dallas, GA, hosts over 700 acres of forested landscape with several fields and a historic cabin. The Battle of Pickett's Mill was one of several Civil War battles occurring in preparation for the Battle of Atlanta. Today this protected area hosts a network of walking trails through hardwood forests and along Pickett Creek. The Silver Comet Trail section between the newly created McPherson Church trailhead and and Coots Lake is arguably the most beautiful section of the trail between Smyrna and Rockmart, GA. The trail runs through the Paulding County Forest where a mature hardwood canopy supports many a number of species more common to North Georgia, such as Ashy Hydrangea.
