Pickett’s Mill Naturalist Walk

October 29, 2022 @ 9:30 am - 12:00 pm

The Pickett’s Mill historic site, located west of Atlanta near Dallas, GA, hosts over 700 acres of forested landscape with several fields and a historic cabin. The Battle of Pickett’s Mill was one of several Civil War battles occurring in preparation for the Battle of Atlanta. Today this protected area hosts a network of walking trails through hardwood forests and along Pickett Creek. The visitor’s center and museum offers much of the site’s history, however our walk will focus on the nature trails that ramble through native woodlands and along rich streambanks. Both Big Leaf and Umbrella Magnolia are found here, along with maturing Beech, Paw Paw, Witch Hazel, Silverbell and Buckeye. These along with still visible Doll’s Eyes, Perfoliate Bellwort, and Jack-in-the-Pulpit tell us the native understory is present and to expect a rich assortment of spring wildflowers. By late October we should see fall color in many species as well as several late-blooming wildflowers along sunny field edges.

We’ll do a moderate hike, about 1.7 – 2.2 miles, along natural trails with some hills, and expect some roots and rocks along trails.

Location is approx. 48 minutes drive from downtown Atlanta, facilities are available at the visitor’s center, open Fri-Sun.
