Become an urban forest expert and learn to lead volunteers in your local parks!
Class topics include forest dynamics, trees, native and invasive species, birds, wildlife, common edible and medicinal plants, planning for successful plantings, and more!
You’ll learn how to identify over 50 trees and other species, their unique character, and the role each plays in the landscape. You’ll learn to recognize old growth forest remnants “hiding in plain sight,” and be able to identify high priority invasive species and teach others to safely remove them from our parks — without using chemical sprays or harming native species. We’ll also show how to choose the most appropriate species to plant in yards and park landscapes, for successful plantings that help restore the rich biodiversity of our region.
Classes and volunteer sessions take place twice per month outdoors in DeKalb parks. Sessions are 2.5 hours each, on weekends. Participants have free access to our supplemental on-line Eco-Literacy class, receive certifications, and are trained to teach and lead others.
Classes and volunteer events are designed for adults, families and young people ages 12 and up. (Motivated young people ages 8 and up welcomed.)
