Silver Comet Naturalist Ride, Paulding Forest

October 29, 2022 @ 2:00 pm - 4:30 pm

The Silver Comet Trail section between the newly created McPherson Church trailhead and and Coots Lake is arguably the most beautiful section of the trail between Smyrna and Rockmart, GA. The trail runs through the Paulding County Forest where a mature hardwood canopy supports many a number of species more common to North Georgia, such as Ashy Hydrangea. Both Big Leaf and Umbrella Magnolia can been seen from the bike path, and we’ll likely see beautiful late blooming asters. Large boulders make for interesting views, and this section also includes the Brushy Mountain tunnel, carved through 800 feet of mountain rock.

We’ll ride west from the McPherson Church trailhead, where it’s about 8 miles roundtrip to the Brushy Mountain Tunnel, and about 10 miles roundtrip to Coots Lake. We’ll ride about 8-10 miles miles per hour with several stops to see interesting natural forest details, such as flora along rocky ledges by the trail. Participants are welcome to ride longer or turn around for a shorter ride wherever they feel comfortable.
