Brookhaven Parks & Recreation Coalition (PARC) & City of Brookhaven
We need your help!
Today our natural landscapes are threatened by invasive species, but using chemical treatments and indiscriminate clearing only further harms fragile ecosystems. Let’s do it right – enjoy outdoor time with friends and neighbors in helping to safely remove invasive species to restore park health.
Many of the invasive species have been removed from this small, lightly used park across from Cross Keys High School, but we need to clean up the last areas and make sure the re-sprouting invasives don’t gain a new foothold. Our reward is to experience a number of old and stately trees, some of which could easily fall into the 200-year range.
We’ll walk approximately .5 miles in a natural area rails and off trail on some steep slopes. Please bring work gloves and we recommend wearing long sleeves, long pants, and sturdy shoes, as we may be working in shrubby areas.
You’ll learn about the special quality of Brookhaven Parks, including their trees, wildlife, rare species and how to identify old growth forest remnants — which might even be found in your back yard!
Due to Covid-19 precautions, we are not re-using gloves, so please bring your own, or we can provide a brand new, unused pair for $5 that you can take home with you (and use next time).
We’ll supply tools such as clippers, loppers, small saws, and digging tools, but feel free to bring your own.
This is a Covid-safe event — we’ll be outdoors at all times following CDC recommended guidelines. And of course if you do not feel well, please consider joining us another time!
