Even if you’re familiar with the walking trails at Cascade Springs Nature Preserve, on this outing we’ll take a fresh look at the native forest with eyes looking for clues to the old growth forest, when the Muskogee Creeks owned this part of Atlanta’s landscape barely 20 decades ago. If you have not yet been to Cascade Springs, you are in for a treat, as this greenspace is arguably the most naturally diverse park in the City of Atlanta, containing a wide variety of natural ecosystems, from younger to older forests, relic trees, boulder-capped ridges, rocky creeks and broad floodplains.
We’ll walk approximately 2 miles on natural surface trails, where we’ll show you how to recognize old growth trees just from their growth forms, and we’ll point out many of the uncommon species and landscape details that help tell the story about this premiere Atlanta greenspace.
