Nature and Birding Bike Ride

June 18, 2022 @ 4:30 pm - 7:30 pm

We loved our last naturalist bike ride so much we’re offering another naturalist and birding ride – but this time on a different section of the Silver Comet Trail.

Bikeways are a great way to experience more types of forest character and hear more songbirds in a shorter period of time than walking. The Silver Comet bike trail offers several beautiful rides through native forests with high biodiversity, especially as we get away from more developed areas.

Kathryn will share naturalist observations about our native woodlands and we’ll listen for native songbirds, including colorful neo-tropical migrants. We’ll ride through the Brushy Mountain Tunnel, see a sophisticated beaver dam complex, and hear the call of the wood thrush, which is especially lovely toward days end. We’ll also hear brilliant red Summer Tanagers, and deep blue Indigo Buntings and hopefully get a glimpse of these striking birds in the canopy or at forest edges.

We’ll ride in later in the day for less heat, beautiful late afternoon light, and to hear more birds calls as we approach the early evening hours. We’ll ride about 16 miles at a moderate pace, about 8-10 mph, stopping several times to talk about what we see and hear. Folks can turn back to the trailhead parking area, at their own pace, at any point they wish.

Bring your own bike (helmet is required) and binoculars are highly recommended, and we’ll also have an extra pair of binocs to share.  Limit 10.
