South River Walk, Rockdale River Trail

August 20, 2022 @ 8:30 am - 11:30 am

Explore a path less traveled along a section of the Rockdale River Trail. This multi-use path is part of the South River-Arabia Mountain-Rockdale River trail system that follows much of Atlanta’s South River as it traverses South DeKalb County and flows on into Rockdale County.

We’ll walk on a fairly short but quite beautiful section of the paved trail near Daniels Bridge Road, then we’ll walk on smaller footpaths off the main trail to access and experience the banks of the South River, which include rocky shoals in this section. We’ll walk about 2.5 to 3 miles out and back, and those who wish can have an optional side walk over to Albert Shoals on the way back. The main trail is easy walking on the paved path with some slopes. Off-tail walking, just along the river’s edge, is on narrow natural footpaths and a horse trail.

We’ll walk through rich native woodlands and one open area where we’ll likely see meadow wildflowers and hear the cheerful call of the brilliant blue Indigo Bunting, and possibly a Prairie Warbler or Field Sparrow. The native forest along the South River has a high diversity of tree species — this is a great place to practice identifying your trees — and there is even Mountain Laurel found where cooler air created by the river corridor provides habitat for species more commonly found in the mountains.

We’ll start early at 8:30 AM to take advantage of the cooler morning air, and you’ll have the option to dip your toes in the water along the banks.

Note: There is a restroom located at the trailhead.
