With life-long commitments to our region’s natural places and arts communities, photographer and master naturalist Kathryn Kolb, and photographer, ceramic sculptor and art educator France Dorman join talents to host an artist’s salon at Ossabaw Island from April 13-18, 2022.

We welcome artists and photographers at all levels to experience the unique natural environment of Ossabaw Island and engage in the spirit of shared artistic inspiration and expression.

Mrs. Sandy West’s mission in protecting the second largest of Georgia’s coastal barrier islands was to ensure a safe haven for the natural ecosystem and all its inhabitants, as well as to provide a haven for students of nature and artists, especially artists inspired by nature.

Our three-night or five-night options to stay on Ossabaw Island include art and nature programming, and salon-style group discussions. All programing is optional, so each attendee can design their weekend itinerary, including quiet, unstructured time to work in their own medium, and to have personal engagement with the island’s landscape. Enjoy furthering your work or perhaps try something new! We’ll gather as a group at meals and for evening salon discussions.

Program options include: How to enhance your vision in the field  Naturalist and birding walks • Night sky photography  Digital imaging on glazed ceramic tiles Forest intelligence  Traditional silver & alternative process photography (cyanotype) and printing in an on-site darkroom. And we’ll host guided outings to island features including maritime forest, old-growth trees, a rookery (if accessible), and a natural beach.

Three gourmet meals each day will be prepared fresh “from scratch” by Chef Leslie Varnadoeformer Island Manager and caretaker for Sandy West, who specializes in dock fresh seafood, vegetarian and healthy southern dishes.

Stay 3 nights to enjoy all programs, stay 2 additional nights for more independent study.
