Blue Heron Preserve and Private Garden Tour
Saturday – 10:00 – noon
Cost: No cost for this event – (a suggested donation of $15 or more helps fund high quality programs)
Location: Roswell Rd just north of Buckhead neighborhood
Join us on a visit to the Blue Heron Nature Preserve and a nearby private garden tour afterwards. The Blue Heron Nature Preserve, located just off Roswell Rd, has two sections with a mix of recovering native forest, wooded trails and restored wetlands that support frogs, turtles, ducks and other wetland dependent species. The preserve is also home for beavers — our native water management engineers — Great Blue Herons and Pileated Woodpeckers. This small but valuable tract barely missed being developed, and was recently purchased by City of Atlanta.
We’ll also walk two blocks to a lovely private garden with 22 years of maturity. The garden is drought tolerant and diversely planted with unusual conifers, shrubs and perennials as an understory to mature trees, with something always in flower 12 months of the year. Early spring is especially interesting with a large collection of blooming epimediums and a tall flowering Sinojackia tree. This yard and garden is a Back Yard Habitat, certified with National Wildlife Federation, and is an Atlanta Audubon Society Wildlife Sanctuary.
This event offered in partnership with the City of Atlanta and Park Pride.
