Join us for a hike on Kennesaw Mountain’s less traveled Pigeon Hill Trail.

Like other well-known rock outcrops near metro Atlanta, Kennesaw Mountain rises above the surrounding landscape hosting a rare diversity of native trees and many uncommon species. As the trail moves upslope toward the summit of Little Kennesaw Mountain, hardwood forests rich with Chestnut Oak and a variety of Hickories become hosts also to species quite rare in the metro area, including Alabama Cherry, Wafer-Ash, and Blue Curls. Rock outcrops along the way host native grasses, sun-loving wildflowers and the occasional prickly pear cactus. Part of the Mountain’s unique habitat is due to underlying geologic forms that provide mineral-rich soils in some areas while others offer thin sandy soils where species adapted to these challenging environments can be found.

Much of today’s natural areas in the Kennesaw Mountain Park complex here were protected due to this site’s history as an important Civil War battleground that set the stage for the Union capture of Atlanta — initiating the end of the Civil War.

We’ll walk along the Pigeon Hill Trail, admiring this remarkable natural area and discussing interesting trees, species and the natural phenomena we’ll find along our way. Neotropical migrant songbirds travel through Kennesaw Mountain forests and with the fall migration now underway we may see these colorful travelers as well.

Prepare for an approximately 2.5 mile walk on natural trails, trail has built-in steps in some areas and there are rocks and roots. We’ll be ascending to the summit of Little Kennesaw, then returning back on the same trail.
