Doll’s Head Trail and Old-Growth Cottonwood

March 6, 2022 @ 9:30 am - 12:00 pm

Eco-A partners with Joel Slaton, creator of the Doll’s Head Trail in DeKalb County’s Constitution Lakes greenspace. We’ll visit the boardwalk and walk through the floodplain and Doll’s Head Trail, which creatively exhibits a truly eclectic mix of objects found in the greenspace, including the namesake dolls’ heads, often with themes of humorous social commentary and juxtapositions. Then we’ll have an option to walk further to visit a very large Cottonwood tree, which is likely to become the new metro area champion.

Kathryn will share naturalist observations and Joel will tell the story of the genesis of the Doll’s Head Trail and some of his interesting finds, along with adventures of a youth spent exploring nature in Atlanta’s south neighborhoods. Joel and his family stayed put during the 60s and 70s when so many other Atlanta families emigrated to the suburbs during the era of racially prejudiced “white flight.”  Joel spent much of his youth roaming woodlands that would later become parks such as Southside and the new Lake Charlotte, and he likely knows the greenspaces in Atlanta’s southeastern quadrant better than anyone.

We’ll walk approximately 1.5 miles on easy paved and natural trails, then have the option to walk further to see the big Cottonwood for an additional 1-1.5 miles on natural paths and off-trail locations. We’ll be in some areas that could be wet and muddy if it has recently rained. Limit 15 participants.
