Creation Care Talk – Our City in the Forest and How to Grow with Trees

September 23, 2018 @ 9:30 am - 10:30 am

North Decatur Presbyterian Church offers Creation Care presentation:  Our City in the Forest and How to Grow with Trees — members of the public are invited and there is no fee to attend

EcoAddendum Director, Kathryn Kolb, shows why Atlanta’s urban forest is so special, and how remnants of the original forest of our region can still be found in the metro area. The settlement and development history of Atlanta, unlike other major cities, left pockets of high value forest in urban neighborhoods. Learn how to “read” the landscape for clues on how to identify these original forest remnants — which might be found in your neighborhood or backyard.

Kathryn also reviews why urban and suburban areas are critical for retaining the bio-diversity of the Southeast, North America’s richest eco-region, and how just having green places located near our homes makes us healthier. She also includes a practical, 4-step approach on how our municipalities could better protect trees and greenspace in the Atlanta metro area by employing new development strategies that incorporate trees at the earliest stages of the planning process. Trees and urban forests are critical to a municipality’s green infrastructure as well to our ecosystems, and science shows that protection of soils is more important to this effort than we’ve realized.

Kathryn includes many photographs illustrating Atlanta’s special forest, the challenges we face and the solutions needed to ensure our City grows with our trees and urban forest for the future. For more information contact us, or contact Lisa Whittle, North Decatur Presbyterian Church, lisa.whittle108@gmail.com.
