Phinizy Swamp, Augusta, GA
November 8 @ 1:30 pm - 3:30 pm
Event Navigation
Join us for another partnership event with our friends at Piedmont Women’s Heart Health: a Naturalist Walk at the Phinizy Swamp Nature Park, an 1100 acre natural area in Augusta, GA.
Augusta sits at the break point between the Georgia Piedmont and the Coastal Plain, so many species we find here are common in both eco-zones. The park is located in the floodplain of the Savannah River and contains meandering trails and boardwalks through woodlands, wetlands and open marsh. Ponds, pockets of wetlands and upland forests interplay in curving patterns that show the dynamic legacy of the changing river course: river, oxbow lake, forest, and river again.
We’ll walk approximately 1.5-2 miles through recovering forest and along causeways and boardwalks. We’ll see Bald Cypress draped with Spanish Moss and Resurrection Fern, towering over ponds blanketed with green Duckweed.
Several acres of the park are dedicated to a series of constructed wetland ponds used in water treatment that have now become a haven for wildlife including many species of water birds. At the time of our walk time we should see many species of migrating water birds in addition to the resident herons and egrets. And fall leaves should be in prime color in early November.
After our walk, we’ll have the option to gather for a late lunch, early supper or just a great cup of coffee for the road – there are many great choices just a few minutes from the Phinizy trails. We highly recommend Avril’s new fave, The Tree House, truly delicious vegan, with lots of tree paintings.
