If you love Brookhaven Parks, become a Brookhaven Eco-Steward!
Did you know several Brookhaven Parks contain old growth forest remnants dating back to the days of the Muscogee Creek Nation?
Today our parks and natural landscapes are threatened by invasive species, but chemical sprays and forest clearing only further harms fragile ecosystems and the health of our parks. Learn all about Brookhaven’s exceptional greenspaces the safest and best ways to help preserve and restore natural areas in Brookhaven Parks!
The City of Brookhaven and EcoAddendum are now offering Eco-Steward classes and volunteer events! Click HERE for more info and to register.

Program participants will gain in-depth knowledge about the trees, plants, birds, wildlife, rare species and the fascinating forest dynamics of our greenspaces, and learn how to lead and train volunteers in restoring healthy biodiversity to these valuable places.
Eco-Steward classes and volunteer events take place approximately twice per month for 10 months to ensure all participants are able to experience parks landscapes in all seasons. Each event is approximately 2.5 – 3 hours, at either a morning or afternoon time on a Saturday or Sunday.

Classes include how to identify and understand the value of keystone species, why these are important, how they tell the story of the landscape, and how they guide us for restoration efforts. We’ll cover how to “read” any natural area in the Georgia Piedmont and identify old growth trees and forest remnants, rare native plants, key vines & shrubs, and invasive species. We’ll also give introductions to birds, wildlife, edible and medicinal plants, tree risk assessment, and forest intelligence. All participants will be trained in the best ways to safely remove invasive species, and learn how to design effective volunteer projects as well and lead and train other volunteers.
