Spink-Collins Park, Naturalist Walk

April 28, 2019 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

Spink-Collins Park is located at about "10 o'clock," in Atlanta's northwest neighborhoods off Bolton Road near the Chattahoochee River. A meandering stream and floodplain roughly parallels slopes with older forest, including sections that host the classic spring ephemeral wildflowers of our highest value forests. A network of private and public lands including a power easement and links to the Chattahoochee corridor make this area a haven for wildlife from deer and coyote to migratory songbirds to birds of prey. In…

Lionel Hampton-Beecher Hills Stewardship Walk

May 12, 2019 @ 2:00 pm - 4:30 pm

Eco-A partners with Friends of Lionel Hampton-Beecher Hills Nature Preserve for a Stewardship Series of educational walks and volunteer sessions. Our walk features trees and indicator species, how to recognize them, why they're important, and how to recognize certain invasive species and remove them before they have a chance to get started  from a high-value forest area -- which is by far the most cost-effective means of invasive control. We're sure to hear and likely see some of the neo-tropical migrant…

May 18, 2019 @ 9:00 am - 3:00 pm

The Dawson Forest is a large, 10,000-acre, yet little-known natural area owned by City of Atlanta, located about one hour north of the City. There are many trails, and we're planning to walk a special section that hosts a native forest that blends Piedmont and mountain habitat, including a small falls on a tributary stream of the Etowah River.  We'll see a rich variety of native wildflowers from dry ridge to cove forest habitat. This forest also hosts many migratory…

Sandy Springs Secret Greenspace

June 2, 2019 @ 8:45 am - 10:15 am

Rescheduled from original May 12 date. A small, lovely greenspace can be found near Abernathy Road in Sandy Springs -- I accidentally discovered this unique natural area during visits to the nearby vet clinic. A small creek with rocky cascades borders a steep slope hosting a forest with chestnut oak and mountain laurel - very unusual for the metro area. Other uncommon species can be found in this surprisingly rich area, which is reminiscent of a cooler, Georgia mountain ecology. …

Dearborn Park and Midway Woods Restoration

June 8, 2019 @ 9:00 am - 11:00 am

Join us for a naturalist walk at Dearborn Park, located just off Candler Road at the edge of Decatur's Winnona Park neighborhood. This greenspace hosts the confluence of creeks coming from Agnes Scott campus and the Wylde Center with Shoal Creek, which runs through the Midway Woods neighborhood and on to join the South River, part of the Ocmulgee/Altamaha River River system -- unlike Decatur's western streams which flow to the Chattahoochee. Dearborn Park hosts trails that access Shoal Creek and…
