Off the Beaten Path at Big Trees Forest Preserve
Despite being located along the busy Roswell Road corridor, Big Trees Forest Preserve illustrates Atlanta metro's classic recipe for old growth forest remnants tucked amidst developed areas. We'll spend some time walking the park's natural trails, but we'll also veer from the path to explore interesting streamside corners and old growth trees. The trees here are not just large, but also show the biodiversity of the Georgia Piedmont. We'll walk approximately 1-1.5 miles on natural surface trails with some hills…

This recent addition to the Dawson Forest Wildlife Management Area complex hosts many miles of Georgia mountain forest and stream trails, including the Tobacco Pouch Trail, a 5.4 mile loop. Located east of Jasper, GA, this trail is longer and more strenuous than many of our Eco-A hikes, but we'll be rewarded with crest-line trails just within the Blue Ridge escarpment, and a major waterfall along Fall Creek. We'll begin high, at about 2800 feet elevation, then descend to the creek…
Find out more »Chattahoochee Kayak and History Tour
Paddle the Chattahoochee River, just south of Atlanta. Those familiar with Atlanta's major creeks -- Peachtree, Proctor and Utoy Creeks -- will enjoy experiencing where these waters go - into the Chattahoochee River, which becomes a large, classic southern River as it leaves Atlanta and flows into the lower Piedmont. In this section of the River, just south of Atlanta, the Chattahoochee opens up to a large, gentle stream, still with a few shoals, flowing past rural farms and forests. Though…
