Black History and Naturalist Walk, at Lionel Hampton-Beecher Hills Nature Preserve

February 10 @ 9:30 am - 12:00 pm

Eco-A partners with Outdoor Afro on this walk in honor of Black History month.

Lionel Hampton-Beecher Hills Nature Preserve is one of the largest parks in the City of Atlanta. Nestled in quiet, forested neighborhoods in the City’s southwestern quadrant, Hampton Beecher Park holds remarkably large areas of healthy native forest, often with very few invasive species. This 200+ acre park had been slated for development but was purchased by the City park largely through the work of Bruce Morton and the West Atlanta Watershed Alliance. (Bruce Morton, at right, center, with his family in Lionel-Hampton Beecher Hills Park in 2016).

This property also bore witness to significant historical events during and after the Civil War. In honor of Black History Month, educator and SW Atlanta resident and activist James Tyler will share important and less well-known facts about the struggle for Atlanta that took place here as well as the often-overlooked history of post-emancipation habitation.

We’ll walk approximately 2 miles, on mostly natural trails, from the upper ridge to the banks of the North Fork of Utoy Creek, and we’ll have the opportunity to see a rare old growth tree.
