Herbert Greene Park, Naturalist Walk
March 16 @ 1:30 pm - 3:30 pm
Herbert Greene Park is a little off the beaten path for most Atlantans, but it’s truly a greenspace gem, located near the Boulder Park neighborhood, just outside the perimeter. Boulder Park is indeed named for the ancient, rounded rock formations found along the west side of Atlanta and extending through Palmetto, GA, and we’ll see some of these in Herbert Greene.
We’ll walk on natural trails following the banks of Utoy Creek, which takes a deep bend with a sandbar often showing tracks of local wildlife. We’ll continue on through native forest to see great views of the creek with impressive boulder formations. The North and South Forks of Utoy Creek have united and in fact become a small river by the time these waters reach Herbert Greene Park, only a short distance from Utoy Creek’s outfall into the Chattahoochee.
Sycamore and River Birch, which have distinctive, artful bark patterns, adorn creek banks, and, unusual for our area, we’ll also find Basket Oak (Swamp Chestnut Oak). More wildlife than is usual for an urban forest call this natural area home, from otter to migratory birds.
We’ll walk approximately 2 miles at a slow, easy pace on fairly flat terrain, stopping to talk about what we find along our way.
