Springtime at Herbert Greene

April 30, 2016 @ 9:00 am - 11:30 am

This walk is full – now taking wait list!
Herbert Greene Park is truly one of Atlanta natural gems. We have traditionally offered our Herbert Greene walk in the fall, so we thought it would be nice to enjoy the myriad greens and water-blue reflections in this exceptional natural area in the spring season for a change. We’ll walk approximately 2 miles roundtrip along a beautiful section of Utoy Creek, which varies from straight-aways, to pools to riffles and short falls around the large rounded rock forms typical of the ancient, underlying geology of the Boulder Park neighborhood.
Debra Murray Herbert Greene Utoy Creek 10.14 copyOur natural trail leads us along Utoy Creek past a large sandbar and on through a healthy and diverse forest, ending at rock formations just a few miles before it flows on to join the Chattahoochee River.
This greenspace holds more wildlife than is usual for an urban zone, including deer, river otter, native mussels, and uncommon birds. In April we’ll very likely see or hear an assortment of neo-tropical songbirds in migration. A wide variety of trees, including basket oak or swamp chestnut oak, is also found here, and we may also see some native wildflowers. A great opportunity for nature photography.
Our walk will be at an easy pace on relatively flat terrain, with a few explorations of the creek bank.
