New Decatur Greenspace UMCH Property

February 24, 2018 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

Enjoy this special preview of what could become Decatur’s newest, largest greenspace!

The United Methodists Children’s Home is a 77-acre property recently purchased by the City of Decatur. The area was a working farm for much of its history dating back to the late 1800’s. Old growth trees a can still be found in some places – at least one was a sapling about 1817, when this part of Georgia still belonged to the Muscogee Creek nation.

On parts of this property, you can feel as though you’ve stepped back in time to a rural landscape. Picturesque fields, a lake often hosting waterbirds, regenerating forest, stream, wetlands and diverse wildlife habitat are the mainstay natural assets of this property. Several very old oaks and dogwoods, and a remnant of a pecan orchard can be found near the old stone chapel and the lawn along Columbia Drive.

Tiny growth rings – 190 total – show this oak tree began life in the old-growth forest, and was preserved on the 19th century farm and property that became the United Methodist Children’s Home.

Get to know this new greenspace — the City of Decatur is just in the beginning stages of planning how this newly acquired property will be used, built or restored.

Public input about this property begins on Feb 11, and all who participate on this walk will have the opportunity to make comments to Decatur planners and officials.
