Glenn Creek Nature Preserve is a small hidden gem, tucked away in the City of Decatur’s Glendale Park neighborhood. With arborist and nearby resident Neil Norton’s leadership, neighbors rallied to partner with City of Decatur to purchase this older forested property as a greenspace from an owner who was willing to sell for less in order to see his property’s natural legacy preserved.

A wide variety of trees, ranging from scarlet and white oaks on the hill top to mid-slope sourwoods, to beech trees and large tulip poplars down by Glenn Creek, serve as the framework for this native forest that functions as an important wildlife refuge in this rapidly redeveloping area. Migrating warblers as well as owls and otters depend on this area for food and shelter.

We’ll explore this preserve, walking on approximately 1/2 mile of natural trails, then Neil Norton will lead us in a short session of “Tree Gong,” a special form of Qi Gong, that he has developed from his own work and teaching. Qi Gong is an ancient practice closely related to Tai Chi, but focuses more on health and awareness training than on a martial arts experience. Neil has developed a distinctive series that focuses on trees, which conduct water and energy in ways we’re only just beginning to discover — did you know trees use quantum mechanics in photosynthesis?

We’ll end our walk learning a few easy-to-do movements that improve our health and connect us to the impressive energy of trees.
