Lionel Hampton Beecher Hills Stewardship

February 23, 2020 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Eco-A, co-host James Tyler and Friends of Lionel Hampton Beecher Hills Nature Preserve invite you learn more about one of Atlanta’s largest parks and help with light forest restoration. Come and learn about the diversity of life in this premiere park, and our place within the greater web of life, including stewardship training — learning the trees, plants, wildlife, and native ecology of Lionel Hampton Beecher Nature Preserve.

We’ll start with a short intro to the unusually high value of this urban forest, and include training on how to identify a few key indicator species that are visible in the winter season along with non-native species that are most easily seen this time of year. At the end of our walk we’ll spend a little time removing  a few “upstart” invasive species in a few key locations before they have a chance to expand into area that are, so far, mostly free of invasive species.

Everyone will learn to recognize and practice identifying several tree species and native plants traditionally found in older forests. These techniques can help you to continue to spread love to your own backyard and local forests all year long.

To register, click HERE.  Details and directions will be sent to registered participants.

A donation of $15 or more helps sustain our programs.

More about James Tyler (at right):

James Tyler is Co-Chair of the Friends of Cascade Springs Nature Preserve, is a naturalist-in-the-making, and an avid bicyclist. He is active in Southwest Atlanta Parks that, as he says, “quietly provide life giving and life sustaining tree canopy that moderates our City’s climate. These forests exude psychological and health benefits to the surrounding neighborhood residents yet are often taken for granted.”
