SUMMARY:Where the Water Goes - Ocmulgee Wildlands
DESCRIPTION:JUN 14 – Where the Water Goes – Ocmulgee Wildlands\nSpecial Event Series – Trip 4\nSaturday  – 8:00 AM – approx. 7:00 PM\nCost: $65 per person\, includes canoe/kayak (BYOLunch)\nLocation: Ocmulgee River near Bonaire\, GA\n\nThe South River joins the Yellow and Alcovy Rivers at Jackson Lake\, then flows on to become Georgia’s Ocmulgee River\, which runs through Macon. It then takes a deep bend through central South Georgia and joins the Oconee to become the Altamaha near Hazelhurst\, GA. We’ll paddle several miles on the Ocmulgee below Macon\, where the river begins to take on the character of a classic coastal plain stream.  Its slow\, meandering current makes dozens of twist and turns\, through mostly undisturbed\, forested banks. More than just a single entity\, the river here becomes a dynamic riverine system that changes frequently as the main current takes cut-throughs\, isolating deep elbow bends that eventually become lakes\, then forest\, then river again. Banks vary from Piedmont forest to swampy floodplain. This rich ecosystem hosts a great diversity of birds and wildlife – yep\, snakes and alligators live there too – and this area is the last part of central Georgia large enough and remote enough to host a small bear population. This will be a full-day adventure. \nVan transportation from Atlanta is available.
