SUMMARY:Where the Water Goes 3 - Canoe/Camp-out during Perseid Meteor Shower
DESCRIPTION:Eco-A features the South River for Where the Water Goes Series 2017!\nEco-A paddling South River\, 2014. \nThis year we partner with the South River Watershed Alliance\, highlighting the South River\, which is born from Atlanta’s southern and eastern springs and \nstreams\, from East Point and Perkerson Park east along the south side of Decatur. When the South River joins the Yellow River at Jackson Lake\, it becomes Georgia’s signature Ocmulgee River\, which drops down through Macon and then bends east to join the Oconee River\, becoming the mighty Altamaha. The Altamaha drains nearly a quarter of the state of Georgia and is one of the largest freshwater systems reaching the eastern coast of North America. \nOur series features five outings\, including walks and canoe trips\, along the South River\, from its headwaters in Atlanta neighborhoods to its outfall at the Atlantic Ocean. \nAug 12\, 13  – Trip 3: Canoe/Camp-out during Perseid Meteor Shower \nin partnership with the South River Watershed Alliance\nCost: $55. per person\nWhat better time to spend a night on a sandy river bank than during a meteor shower! This is the weekend the Perseids will be at their peak.\nFor our third South River outing we’ll take to canoes and kayaks and paddle a respectable 9-10 mile section of the South River before it reaches Jackson Lake. We’ll listen for birds\, learn about the remaining forest along the banks\, and learn about the overall history and ecology of our river which becomes Georgia’s dominant river after joining with Yellow River to become the Ocmulgee. In 1540\, Hernando de Soto’s men were fed roasted venison\, wild onions\, and corncakes by Native Americans in a town called Ichisi\, located along the Ocmulgee river just south of today’s Macon\, Georgia.\nWe’ll put in on Saturday morning and camp out overnight in tents by the river\, cooking over a campfire—bring your own edibles.
