SUMMARY:The Overhill Towns\, Cherokee History w/Quentin Bass
DESCRIPTION:Quentin Bass\, is an ecologist and the Tribal Liaison to the Cherokee for the US Forest Service\, Cherokee National Forest\, and he joins Eco-A again to continue our unique and enlightening series on Cherokee history and the natural lands they called home. \nOn this trip we’ll focus on the Overhill Towns\, the cultural center for the Cherokee people\, located in the Tennessee Valley just west of the high Appalachians. On Saturday we’ll visit several historic sites\, and Quentin will share his deep knowledge of the people and the times that shaped not just our area but the whole nation.\nThe sites we’ll visit are near Vonore\, TN — the Tellico Blockhouse\, Ft. Loudon (reconstructed)\, the Sequoyah Birthplace Museum (owned and operated by the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians)\, and the site of the great Council House at Chota\, the “mother town\,” which was the cultural as well as population center of the Cherokee Nation from 1650-the early 1800s.\nFor those who wish to stay overnight\, we’ll plan an optional visit to either Bald River Falls\, a spectacular waterfall with a stream side trail\, or possibly a visit to a high elevation “Bald” along the Cherohala Skyway. \nCost: $40 per person\, and there’s an additional $5 fee at the Sequoyah Museum.\nNote: If staying overnight\, we recommend The Lodge at Tellico near Tellico Plains\, TN\nQuestions? – call 404-862-0118\nTo register (RSVP) click HERE  – Details and directions sent to registered participants. \nA donation of $15 or more helps support our programs.\n \n
