SUMMARY:Reading the Forest at Autrey Mill Nature Preserve
DESCRIPTION: \nLearn how to understand any forested area in our region\, including forest age\, health and character\,  just by “reading” a few key trees and other easy-to-learn species.\n We’ll do an easy walk along the nature trails at Autrey Mill Nature Preserve\, from ridge to stream-side trails\, and from younger forest areas to older stands of hardwoods. We’ll highlight many species of trees\, other forest indicator species\, and share interesting observations about forest character. \nThe Autrey Mill property was originally owned by the Muscogee Creek\, then Cherokee Nations\, then after the Cherokee were forced to leave their lands in the 1830’s\, Americans divided their lands into parcels for land lotteries\, and a succession of farming families owned the tract from the 1800s thru the mid-twentieth century.\nWe’ll walk about 1.5 – 2 miles on natural trails that are rated easy to moderate\, there are a few roots and rocks and a few up- and down-hills\, but natural surface trails are well established\, and walking is pretty easy most of the way.  \nA visitor’s center\, historic buildings\, gardens and farm animals can also be visited after we walk the trails. Restrooms are available at the parking area.  \n \nTo register (RSVP) click HERE – details and directions sent to registered participants.\nA donation of $20 or more helps support our programs.\n
