SUMMARY:Rare Environments of Georgia - Heggie's Rock
DESCRIPTION:The southeastern US is one of the richest environments on our planet. And Georgia\, which contains a wide range of ecosystems\, from the Appalachian Mountains to two different coasts\, holds an extraordinary degree of biodiversity. Many rare species can be found in unusual micro-environments\, such as ancient the ancient rock outcrops of the Piedmont\, of which Heggie’s Rock is a special example.\nHeggie’s Rock is an approximately 100 acre-tract acquired by the Nature Conservancy that hosts a number of very rare species not far from Augusta\, GA. Rock outcrops in the Georgia Piedmont were formed over 200 million years ago\, and host particular conditions of sun\, moisture\, lack of moisture and mineral components that create an unusual ecosystem to which particular species have gradually become adapted over long periods of time.\n \nHeggie’s Rock is a 130-acre rock dome formation that rises about 70 feet above the surrounding landscape. Rock expanses are covered with lichens\, a variety of mosses edge rainwater pools\, we’ll find some cacti\, and varying types of wildflowers bloom in every season. You will want to bring your camera.\nEco-A partners with the Nature Conservancy in hosting this special opportunity to visit this rare environment\, which is not open to public access except with special permission.\nto register (RSVP) click HERE\ndetails & directions sent to registered participants \na donation of $15 or more helps fund our programs\nAbove Photograph: Heggie’s Rock © Marc DelSanto\n  \n
