SUMMARY:Perseid Meteor Shower\, Pine Mountain\, GA
DESCRIPTION:It’s that time of year again — when our planet earth passes through the trail left by the Swift-Tuttle Comet\, a 16-mile wide ball of rock\, ice and dust that sheds debris particles as it flies through our part of the solar system about every 130 years. Tiny particles from the comet’s trail\, most no bigger than a grain of sand\, light up the sky as meteors\, as they streak into the earth’s atmosphere at about 100\,000 miles per hour!\nWe’ll have the opportunity to view the Perseid Meteor shower this year from the top of Pine Mountain\, GA\, during the two peak viewing nights  – Saturday Aug 10 and Sunday Aug 11.  \nWe’ll stay in a large cabin at the Mountaintop Inn and Resort\, just a few minutes from where we’ll view the night sky on the top of the mountain.\n \nNo hiking is necessary for viewing meteors\, lodging and viewing areas will be easily accessible by car – but we’ll offer an optional 1/2 day hike on a section of the Pine Mountain Trail on Sunday morning\, and there are other spots to visit such as Dowdell’s Knob\, where President Franklin Delano Roosevelt contemplatively looked over the Georgia landscape while forming his vision for the New Deal of the 1930s. Calloway Gardens is nearby as well.\nIn addition to 9 bedrooms\, our cabin has 3-kitchens\, 3-living rooms\, and a pool. (In case we fill our cabin\, additional single rooms are also available at the Lodge.) \nCabin lodging fees: $155 for a single person (for both Sat and Sun nights)\, or $185 for couples (for both Sat and Sun nights)\, includes all fees and taxes.\nPlease note: Due to high interest in this event our original cabin rooms have sold out. There is still room for folks to attend\, but we’ll need to reserve additional rooms in other cabins or the Lodge at the Mountaintop Inn and Resort\, which will likely cost a little more than for original cabin rooms.
