SUMMARY:Ossabaw Island
DESCRIPTION:Explore nature photography\, birding\, and more on one of Georgia’s premiere barrier islands! \nWe invite nature-lovers\, nature photographers and nature artists of all skill levels to join us for a long weekend on Ossabaw Island\, the 3rd largest of Georgia’s barrier islands. Ancient maritime forest\, salt marsh and beach environments host a broad array birds and wildlife we’ll see on walks and island outings. Migratory shorebirds traveling from the southernmost tips of South America to to their Arctic nesting grounds are commonly seen near our lodging houses in late April and early May. \nFine art photographer and master naturalist Kathryn Kolb hosts this 4-night stay on Ossabaw in honor of the vision and spirit of Sandy West (1913-2021)\, Ossabaw’s owner\, protector and advocate since the 1960s.\nMrs. West’s mission in protecting one of Georgia’s largest coastal barrier islands was to ensure a safe haven for its natural ecosystem and all its inhabitants\, as well as to provide a haven for students of nature and artists\, especially artists inspired by nature. Our ability to learn about and experience Ossabaw Island’s remarkable natural environment is made possible by Sandy West’s vision and dedication to protecting the island from development\, and the on-going work of the Ossabaw Island Foundation.\n\n \n\n\n  \n  \nParticipants can choose from a variety of programs and activities including • Native forest ecosystem walks and excursions • Nature’s geometry and forest intelligence • Birding by sight and call • How to enhance your vision in the field using any kind of camera (including cell phones). We may have an additional special guest instructor join us as well – stay tuned!\n\nWe’ll host guided outings to maritime forest\, old-growth trees\, a rookery (if accessible)\, saltmarsh\, and a natural “bone yard” beach. Evenings will be open for salon-style discussions on nature\, art and related topics\, and one evening will include a slide show on the Nature of Photography.  \n\nParticipants can design their own weekend itinerary\, combining activities with quiet\, unstructured time to make photographs\, paint or write and create a personal connection with the island’s natural landscape. We’ll gather as a group at meals\, prepared fresh from scratch by Chef Leslie Varnadore\, former on-island coordinator/caretaker for Sandy West. Chef Leslie specializes in dock fresh seafood\, vegetarian and healthy southern dishes. \n\nAll inclusive trip fees pending final preparations – to secure your space\, a $650 non-refundable deposit is due Jan 31\, 2026. (6 spaces left)\n\nIsland Lodging:  Club House is an historic early 1900’s hunting lodge\, and Boarding House is an historic cottage\, partially restored. Most rooms accommodate 2 people\, most bathrooms will be shared. \nBecause lodging is limited\, our group will be the only group on the island during our stay 🙂 \nTo register click HERE\nFor questions\, contact: Kathryn      404-862-0118\n  \n\n\n
