SUMMARY:Old Growth Forest at Fischer Mansion
DESCRIPTION:This walk is full – please see more upcoming walks!\nPlease join us for a very special private tour on the grounds of the historic Fischer Mansion\, which was previously home to the D’Youville Academy for Girls\, located in Brookhaven\, on Atlanta’s north side. In this small area we will see true remnants of the original old growth forest including one tulip poplar tree\, “Grandfather\,” who dates back to the Revolutionary War\, with a base circumference of over 20 feet.  Even in this relatively small area\, we’ll see a remarkable array of tree species and native wildflowers\, including very old Beech\, Silverbell\, Big Leaf Magnolia\, and Catesby’s Trillium\, growing near the banks of Nancy Creek.\nLong time neighbor\, Tom Reilly\, who is also Area Habitat Coordinator for The National Wildlife Federation\, will co-lead our walk and share much of the history of this interesting historic site\, which was originally purchased from the Muscogee/Creek Nation in the early 1800’s.\nWe’ll walk on and off trail for only about ¼ mile\, but there is steep slope\, and an impressive set of steps that alone are a great workout!\nNote: the Fischer Mansion and grounds are not open to the general public.\nBring your camera – the large trees and beautiful stretch of Nancy Creek will be an excellent landscape for photographers. Limit 10.\n\nto Register click HERE\nDetails and directions sent to registered participants — your donation of $15 or more helps fund Eco-A’s great programs!\n\n Nancy Creek\, and “Grandfather\,” is a true old growth Tulip Tree dating back to the Revolutionary War – photos: KKolb\nQuestions?  Contact Eco-A  or call 404-862-0118\n\n\n
