SUMMARY:Mushrooms and More Walk at Dawson Forest
DESCRIPTION:\nNote: Due to conflicts with area use\, this walk is being rescheduled\, please contact us for more information.\nThe Dawson Forest is a large but little known natural area owned by City of Atlanta\, located about 1 hour north of the City. There are many trails\, but we’re planning to walk a special section that includes a waterfall on a tributary stream of the Etowah River. \nPhoto: Chantarelle\, Mushroom Club of Georgia \nEco-A partners with the Georgia Mushroom Club for a 1.5- mile on natural trails\, from pine and oak-hickory hilltops to cascading streams and a floodplain along the Etowah River. This area holds many types of ecosystems\, and is also known as a great birding location\, so there should be a good variety of fungi. Part of the area where we’ll walk holds the rich remnants of the original Piedmont forest that nearly approaches the ecology of the North Georgia Mountains.  \nElliot Horner and Sam Landes lead as mushroom experts\, and Kathryn Kolb shares general naturalist information about this special area.\nWe’ll only walk about 1.5 to 2 miles total\, but there is a steep hill coming back up the trail. We’ll likely walk off trail from time to time to check out any interesting fungi we may see.
