SUMMARY:Meteor Shower at Max Patch Bald\, NC
DESCRIPTION:Max Patch Bald rises well over 4\,000 feet in the high Blue Ridge near Hot Springs\, North Carolina. What better place to see the Perseid Meteor Shower! We’ll watch the meteor shower Friday evening\, then take a morning hike along the loop trail which hosts many unusual species found in the higher elevations.  Perhaps we’ll even be lucky and hear Hermit thrushes or the amazing song of the Veery. \nThe unusual “bald” or open area at the top of Max Patch offers a 360-degree view of the surrounding western North Carolina mountains including the Smokies. It’s a great place to watch both sunrise and sunset — and of course we’ll hope for clear skies to view meteors on Friday night\, one of the peak days predicted for the shower.  \nAn interesting array of trees\, plants and wildlife occur at these higher elevations\, contributing to the world-class biodiversity found in the Southern Appalachian mountains and Southeast in general. Juncos\, Winter Wrens\, Hermit Thrushes\, Veerys and other songsters make their summer nests here in the high forests. \nWe’ll stay at the Kana’ti Lodge right at the top of the mountain. The owners are committed to principles of responsible stewardship\, sustainable forestry and healthy permaculture. Meals served are “off the chain” according to Kana’ti Lodge veteran Jessica Muhammad. \nThere are only seven spaces available for lodge rooms\, and camping is limited. The trip is limited to 15 people. \n \nCost is $175 with a bed in the lodge  (2 guests per room\, Friday night. Dinner on Friday evening and breakfast Saturday morning is included). \nCost is $125 for camping (includes camping on Kana’ti Lodge grounds\, use of Kana’ti facilities\, plus dinner Friday evening and breakfast Saturday morning). \nNote: An additional night’s stay (Sat) is $75 for lodge and $25 for campers\, plus $10 per additional meal. \nTo register\, click HERE  – Details and directions will be sent to registered participants. \nA donation of $15 or more helps sustain our programs.\n
