SUMMARY:Lake Charlotte
DESCRIPTION:\nthis event is full\, now taking wait list\nCome explore Atlanta’s newest large park – Lake Charlotte Nature Preserve! This 216-acre natural area is one of South Atlanta’s green gems hosting a mature native forest including stands of Shagbark Hickory which is rare in the metro Atlanta area\, and even the Georgia Piedmont generally. It was also the first City of Atlanta park purchased with funds from the Tree Trust Fund.\nThe unusual geology underlying the park\, which includes part of DeKalb County’s Soapstone Ridge\, contributes to the biodiversity of the forest\, and is likely why it was preserved since the hilly\, rocky terrain did not lend itself well to farming or to previous development. The special soapstone formations were also important to Native Americans who\, around 2000 BCE\, carved cooking bowls out of the rock to be used due to qualities similar to cast iron. \nThe hills and topography will also give us a work-out – our hike will be approximately 3 miles partly on natural trails and partly off-trail with some possible bushwacking. The terrain is quite steep in places and often rocky\, so this hike will be a little more strenuous than most Eco-A walks\, but it is well worth it to visit and explore this very special greenspace in Southeast Atlanta. \n Limit 15 participants.\nTo register (RSVP) click HERE – details and directions sent to registered participants.\nA donation of $15 or more helps support our programs.\nShagbark Hickory at Lake Charlotte Preserve\, photo © Kathryn Kolb 2021 \n  \n\n
