SUMMARY:Kittredge Park/Ellwyn John Wildlife Sanctuary
DESCRIPTION:Kittredge Park is adjacent\, and serves as entrance\, to the Ellwyn John Wildlife Sanctuary\, where a series of trails\, connect both properties in the North Druid Hills/Briarcliff/Merry Hills neighborhood\, not far from Toco Hills.\nThis greenspace hosts an interesting mix of highly impacted but recovering landscape as well as a remnant of the original forest of our region.\nThere are several remarkable trees along the trail\, which crosses the creek twice and runs from floodplain to hilltop and back. There is a healthy mix of tree species found here\, including a variety of Oaks\, Hickories\, Ash\, Beech\, Paw Paw\, and at least one exceptionally large twin Tulip tree (at right). A few trees may date back to the 1800s\, and there are relict native plant communities that are indeed a legacy of the old-growth forest.\nFriends of Kittredge Park\, including residents from Merry Hills Homeowners Assn.\, North Druid Hills Residents Assn.\, LaVista Park Civic Assn.\, and North Amanda Civic Association have done much work in removing invasive species in several areas.
