SUMMARY:Johnson-Taylor Champion Tree Walk
DESCRIPTION:Eco-A partners with Marti Breen and Friends of Herbert Taylor Park and Daniel Johnson Park for a stroll through the old growth forest which hosts a surprising number of Atlanta Champion Trees\, including a “newly discovered” giant Shumard Oak. We’ll talk about the trees and ecology of this special forest which also hosts an unusual population of American Hazelnut. Our trail will take us along two creeks as well as the very large South Fork of Peachtree Creek\, which is near a small river at this location.\nChampion Trees are those whose diameter\, height and crown spread exceed others of the same species. These are often the oldest trees\, though not always\, since a tree’s size also depends on growing conditions. Several tree species native to our region can achieve ages of 500 years and more\, and many can be 100-200 years at relatively small sizes.\nWe’ll walk approximately 1.5 – 2 miles for an easy to moderate walk on natural trails with some hills.\n\nTo register (RSVP) click HERE – details and directions sent to registered participants. \nA donation of $15 or more helps support our programs. \n
