SUMMARY:Kayak/Camp Chattahoochee Bend
DESCRIPTION:Georgia is graced with water resources that would be the envy of much of the world. The Atlanta metro area hosts a subcontinental divide and watersheds that give rise to two of Georgia’s major rivers\, the Ocmulgee and the Flint\, as well as a portion of the 430 mile-long Chattachoochee River.\nThis year’s Eco-A Where the Water Goes series follows the Chattahoochee River from it’s headwaters in the North Georgia Mountains\, down through Atlanta and South Georgia and on to Florida\, where it becomes the Appalachicola River\, creating a rich estuary that supports one of the most important oyster fisheries in the US before finally emptying into the Gulf of Mexico.\nTrip 3 – Kayak and Camp-out on the Chattahoochee – 11-6:00 pm – this outing is full\, now taking wait list\n\nCosts – $45 per person (Kayak – tandem kayaks available) Camping – $20 per person\nWe’ll travel for approximately 5 hours along a quite beautiful stretch of the Chattahoochee River by kayak\, which flows through farms and woodlands\, and past the historic bluffs where the controversial Creek Chief\, William McIntosh\, established an estate in the early 1800’s.\n \nThis is an easy float for beginners\, with just a few “riffles” to keep us on our toes. We’ll stop for a break or two at large rocks or interesting banks.\nWe’ll talk about an interesting chapter of Georgia’s history and the Native Americans who lived in this region of the South\, from the time of DeSoto’s march till the Trails of Tears in the 1830’s. We’ll also take note of the classic riverine and floodplain trees and plants and animals such as Sycamore\, River Birch\, Tupelo\, Box-elder\, River Oats\, native mussels\, otters\, mink\, and many more.\nWe’ll take out of the river about 6 PM\, and we’ll gather for supper for those staying to camp overnight. Our campsites are awesome – on platforms right by the river.
