SUMMARY:Boat Rock Boulders with Bill Witherspoon
DESCRIPTION: \nThis walk is full – now taking wait list\nMany of Atlanta area’s premier greenspaces are located on Atlanta’s westside. Why? One reason is because areas with boulders and rock outcrops in the past were not the best locations for farming or building\, so these areas often remained as woodlands. \nGeologist Bill Witherspoon\, co-author of Roadside Geology of Georgia\, joins us for a walk in this little-known greenspace just outside the Atlanta City limits in Fulton County near the Boulder Park neighborhood and Fulton Industrial Boulevard. \nThis special tract\, that hosts impressive whale-sized boulders\, some stacked on top of one another\, was nearly destroyed for development. But the boulder formations and forest that surrounded them were saved at the last minute by the Southeastern Climbers Coalition – you can see the dynamited fractures in some of the boulders. \nThe Piedmont area of Georgia\, and neighborhoods all around Atlanta\, have a dynamic geologic history as the continents of North America\, Africa\, and others bumped against each other creating upwellings of molten rock millions of years ago. These cooled to become the boulders we see today.Bill Witherspoon will explain the history of these formations as well as teach us how to identify the various minerals in the stones. We’ll also talk about the forest in this special area\, that includes a wide variety of trees including\, uncommonly\, chestnut oak. \nGeologist Bill Witherspoon\, co-author\, Roadside Geology of Georgia \n  \nLimit 15 participants \n\nTo register (RSVP) click HERE – \ndetails and directions sent to registered participants. \nA donation of $15 or more helps support our programs.\n  \n
