SUMMARY:Biking and Birding
DESCRIPTION:\n\nEver wondered what birds you are hearing while riding your bike? Bikeways are great opportunity to experience more forest types and ecosystems in a much shorter period of time than we could accomplish by walking. And that’s great for hearing and seeing a wide variety of birds\, especially when we get out past more developed areas. \nKathryn leads a birding and naturalist bicycle tour along one of her favorite sections of the Silver Comet Trail. We’ll visit spots where there are colonies of nesting swallows and swifts\, and as we ride we’ll listen for bird calls\, especially of  neo-tropical migrant songbirds who often nest along the forested edges of the trail — the call of the wood thrush is especially lovely at the end of the day.\n \nWe’ll ride at a moderate pace\, about 8-10 mph\, and stop several times to talk about what we see\, and stop to see some of the birds we’re hearing. We’ll ride about 8 miles all-together for the first part of the ride\, and for those up for a longer adventure\, we’ll have the opportunity to see a classic example of a beaver dam complex found at about the 11 mile mark for an approximately 22 mile ride roundtrip. We’ll ride in the later afternoon for less heat\, beautiful late light\, and to hear more birds calls as we approach the early evening hours.  Folks can return to the trailhead parking area\, at their own pace\, at any point they wish.\nBring your own bike (helmet is required) and binoculars are highly recommended\, and we’ll also have an extra pair of binocs to share.  Limit 10.\n\n \nTo register (RSVP) click HERE – details and directions sent to registered participants. \nA donation of $15 or more helps support our programs.\n
