SUMMARY:Autrey Mill
DESCRIPTION: \nJoin us for an easy walk along the nature trails at Autrey Mill Nature Preserve and Heritage Center in John’s Creek\, just north of Atlanta.\nThis property was originally owned by the Muscogee Creek\, then Cherokee Nations\, then after the Cherokee were forced to leave their lands in the 1830’s\, Americans divided their lands into parcels for land lotteries\, and a succession of farming families owned the tract from the 1800s thru the mid-twentieth century. \nToday the property stands at just under 50 acres and hosts older forest remnants as well as newer forest recovering from fields and pasture. We’ll be able to “read” the history of the different forest areas by trees and landscape\, and we’ll likely see several uncommon wildflowers and plants\, such as running cedar\, and hopefully — if our timing is right — an unusual stand of Pink Lady’s Slipper orchids. A rocky creek borders one edge of the property and one of the trails.\nWe’ll walk about 1.5 – 2 miles on natural trails that are rated easy to moderate. There are a few up- and down-hills\, and roots and rocks are found in few areas\, but walking is pretty easy most of the way.  \nA visitor’s center\, historic buildings\, gardens and farm animals can also be visited after we walk the trails.
