SUMMARY:Atlanta Forest Diversity Walk with Linda Chafin
DESCRIPTION:This walk is full – now taking wait list\nEco-A is very fortunate to host a special walk in a West Atlanta greenspace near Utoy Creek with renowned botanist and author Linda Chafin\, whose most recent publications include Field Guild to the Wildflowers of Georgia and Surrounding States and Field Guide to the Rare Plants of Georgia.  \n \nThis walk is offered in association with Eco-A’s Diversity+Bio-diversity=Resiliencypanel discussion at the Park Pride Annual Atlanta Greenspace Conference. \nBecause Atlanta’s growth history was unusual — it was mostly rural farm communities with a very small urban area until the mid 1900s — many large\, biologically diverse greenspaces can still be found in pockets throughout our metro-area\, which is rare in major cities. The west side offers several such locations\, especially in the Utoy Creek watershed. \nThe clue to the oldest\, most intact forest remnants are the native plants we find. Plant expert Linda Chafin leads us on an exploratory hike where we’ll have the opportunity to see many species that are now found typically only in large forest such as in North Georgia – right in the City limits! Chafin is currently a Conservation Botanist at the State Botanical Garden of Georgia\, at the University of Georgia in Athens. She was formerly a botanist for the Florida Natural Areas Inventory and a private environmental consultant. She has a M.S. in Botany from UGA\, where she studied under Dr. Sam Jones\, Jr. and wrote a thesis on the flora and ecology of Southern Appalachian boulderfields. She has conducted rare species surveys and natural community inventories throughout the southeastern U.S. since the mid-1980s. Linda is a native of Atlanta\, Georgia. \nShe is the author of The Field Guide to the Wildflowers of Georgia and Adjacent States\, A Field Guide to the Rare Species of Georgia\, and A Field Guide to the Rare Plants of Florida. \n
