Where the Water Goes – Canoe to Rockdale

May 17, 2014 @ 9:00 am - 3:00 pm

MAY 17, 2014 – Where the Water Goes – Canoe to Rockdale

Special Event Series – Trip 3 – this outing is full, now taking a wait list

Saturday  – 8:30/9:00 – 3:00/4:00 pm

Cost: $40 includes canoe fee and lunch ($30 BYO Lunch)

Location: South River in South DeKalb/Rockdale County

“I’m always amazed at how resilient the South River really is” says SRWA President Jackie Echols. After finding it’s way through Atlanta’s south urban zone, the South River settles out into a medium-sized stream, navigable by canoe/kayak, which is how we’ll experience this beautiful riparian corridor as it heads south toward Jackson Lake and Macon, GA. Outdistancing sprawl, and running by small towns and farms, this stretch of river retains a quiet remote feeling, and it’s natural banks serve as a haven for birds, from long-legged waders to migrating songbirds. We’ll float about 5 miles (approx 4 hrs) with a snack break and naturalist talk midway. The river is mostly “flat water” with a few riffles here and there. No canoe experience is necessary to enjoy this bit of wilderness still within half an hour of town.

This special outing series is offered in partnership with Keeping It Wild and the South River Watershed Alliance.
