South Bend Stewardship

May 29, 2021 @ 9:30 am - 12:00 pm

New date – May 29

Eco-A joins Friends of South Bend Park and Sustainable Lakewood in new efforts to restore this special park located in South Atlanta near the Lakewood Amphitheatre.

Each South Bend Park Stewardship event features educational as well as volunteer activities. We’ll learn about the special features of the urban forest found in the park, including key tree species, edible seeds and fruits, songbirds and raptors, wildlife, and indicator plants as well as the invasive species that threaten the health of our park’s forests. Each event also includes a volunteer opportunity to help restore the park’s landscape.

Stewardship event attendees will become experts about the natural values of South Bend Park and will be trained to share their knowledge and skills with friends and family as well as lead other groups of volunteers.

Our Stewardship event Saturday, May 29th will focus on spring ephemeral wildflowers and how these uncommon species are an important clue to reading the forest’s story. We’ll also have a short intro to native migratory birds, and work to remove invasive species.

We’ll focus on removing invasive species, including English ivy in a special area that still retains some of the original landscape of our region that Native Americans would have known.

Note: Space is limited and preferences are made for neighborhood residents, leaders, and pre-registered South Bend Park Eco-A Stewardship participants.

This event is sponsored in part by the National Fish and Wildlife Federation 5-Star Program.
