Sawnee Mountain Preserve holds over 800 acres of woodlands and trails, including the popular Indian Seats Trail, leading to a rock formation and a northern view looking into the North Georgia mountains. The preserve includes a large portion of the 5-mile Sawnee Mountain ridge, which rises to just over 1900 feet at the highest point. Roughly an hour’s drive north of downtown Atlanta, Sawnee Mountain is one of the last reaches of lower mountains as the Appalachians give way to the Georgia Piedmont in metro Atlanta’s northern ex-urbs. We’ll look for species that may be at home here and further north that are seldom found closer to the City or more south. Atlanta is an interesting breakpoint between ecosystems for many species.

We’ll hike the Indian Seats Trail, about 3.8 miles total from the visitor’s center. We’ll begin with an introduction to the history of the area, then we’ll enjoy a naturalist walk, discovering what our path offers as we hike.
