Naturalist Bike Ride, Silver Comet Trail

June 20, 2021 @ 3:30 pm - 7:00 pm

We often don’t stop to look at the forests along our bikeways, but we can easily learn to apply our naturalist skills as we ride, from recognizing trees and plant communities to listening for birds. Kathryn leads a naturalist bike tour along one of her favorite sections of the Silver Comet Trail. We’ll visit spots where there are colonies of nesting swallows and swifts, detour along a wetland boardwalk, and stop from time to time to talk about interesting natural details.

We’ll ride about 8 miles all-together for the first part of the ride, and for those up for a longer adventure, we can visit a classic example of a beaver dam and pond found at about the 11 mile mark for an approximately 22 mile ride roundtrip. We’ll ride in the very late afternoon for a slightly cooler time, beautiful light, and hopefully to hear a few evening bird calls.

We’ll ride at a moderate pace, about 8-10 mph, and stop several times to talk about what we see. We’ll begin the outing fairly slowly and stopping frequently, then ride with fewer stops for the later/longer part of the ride. Folks can return to the trailhead parking area at their own pace, at any point they wish.

FYI, for those of you who have walked with Eco-A before, especially the later/longer part of the ride will be a little more exercise, with a moderate but not too fast riding pace.

Limit 10. (Bring your own bike, and helmet is required)
