Hampton-Beecher/Cativo Trail

April 16, 2016 @ 9:00 am - 11:30 am

The Lionel Hampton-Beecher Nature Preserve is one of the largest nature preserves in the Atlanta area, approximately 200 acres, with a several miles of both paved and natural trails. The preserve exists due to the extraordinary work of west Atlanta residents and members of the West Atlanta Watershed Alliance (WAWA), a non-profit organization that originated through a community struggle for environmental justice and now focuses on environmental stewardship.

For this outing we’ll take the less traveled Cativo Drive entrance, an unpaved trail that runs alongside the North Fork of Utoy Creek though several forest types, from a broad flood plain, to oak-hickory slopes with ridges behind. We’ll walk through a dynamic, recovering forest which even includes a relict or two from the original old growth that existed here less than 20 decades ago. Several parts of the creek in this section are quite beautiful, with deep pools and impressive sandbars. We’ll walk on relatively flat terrain for approximately 1.5 – 2 miles total.
