Forest Valentine, Grove Park Stewardship

February 15, 2020 @ 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Love is in the air, and English ivy is in the forest! Eco-A invites you to share some love this Valentine’s weekend by providing hands-on restoration efforts for Atlanta’s urban forest. Join us while we work to remove English ivy and other invasive plants in a very special original forest remnant at Grove Park and Proctor Creek. The unique plant community native to this forest is dependent upon early spring light, and the removal of invasive, over-shading plants ensures our native plants can survive on the forest floor.  Many of these are uncommon wildlflowers that bloom brightly in the short season before the trees come into full leaf cover in the later spring and summer.

We’ll start with a short intro to the unusually high value of this urban forest, and include training on how to identify native from non-native species, and how to remove invasive species such as privet, autumn olive, english ivy, and others. We will also practice identifying native plants traditionally found in older forests. These techniques can help you to continue to spread love to your own backyard and local forests all year long.
