Canoe overnight camp-out during Perseid Meteor Shower

August 10, 2019 @ 12:00 pm - August 11, 2019 @ 2:00 pm

This event is full – now taking waitlist

Eco-A partners with the South River Watershed Alliance, on this canoe paddle and overnight camp-out on Georgia’s Ocmulgee/Altamaha River — during the Perseid Meteor shower!

The South River is born in City of Atlanta’s southeastern neighborhoods, then flows on to become the Ocmulgee after joining the Yellow River, and flowing on past Macon and toward the Atlantic coast. We’ll paddle the lower end of the Ocmulgee, and through its confluence with the Oconee when it becomes Georgia’s largest river, the Altamaha, which drains nearly a quarter of our state and is one of the largest freshwater systems to flow into the Atlantic Ocean in North America.

We’ll paddle Saturday afternoon, and camp overnight on a sandbar, then paddle on the next morning to our takeout point. It’s primitive camping, we’ll have a fire to cook on, and everyone brings their own edibles and grill-ables. (Coolers will fit in the canoes, best if they’re on the smaller side.)

Peak activity for the Perseid Meteor shower this year is Aug 9-14, so we should see a number of meteors in the night sky over our camp.

Paddling here is easy, the river is a series of  “S” curves with sandbars common along the banks, where it’s still common to find the shells of native mussels. Southeastern river systems hold the highest freshwater mussel species diversity on earth.

Previous paddling experience is helpful but not necessary, children over 7 are welcome with parent or guardian.

Cost: $85. per person, Limit 12 (includes canoe rental, shuttle, guide; 2 adults per canoe, discounts for young people riding in canoe with 2 adults)
