Boulders at Boat Rock

February 20, 2021 @ 10:00 am - 12:30 pm

Many of Atlanta area’s premier greenspaces are located on Atlanta’s westside. Why? One reason is because areas with boulders and rock outcrops in the past were not the best locations for farming or building, so these areas often remained as woodlands.

Boat Rock Nature Preserve is a special tract that holds impressive whale-sized boulders, some stacked on top of one another. This area was nearly destroyed for development. But the boulder formations and forest that surrounded them were saved at the last minute by the Southeastern Climbers Coalition – you can even see some of the dynamited fractures in some of the boulders.

The Piedmont area of Georgia and neighborhoods all around Atlanta have a dynamic geologic history because as the continents of North America, South America, Africa, and Europe bumped against each other they created upwellings of molten rock millions of years ago. These molten rocks cooled to become the boulders we see today.

We’ll also talk about the forest in this special area, which includes a wide variety of trees including chestnut oak and a variety of uncommon native species.
